Dysoptic

Description: As a graduating senior at Iowa State University, we're tasked to research, design, and create our capstone projects. The topic is up for us to decide, giving us a complete choice and freedom to create the project and define what the end deliverables are going to be. I chose to do my capstone over dyslexia.

The problem: There are a large variety of research papers and books talking about dyslexia. Trying to inform people about what it is and how it affects people.  However, the problem with this is that they are large amounts of text, but little to no visuals. Having large amounts of text can prove difficult/intimidating for those who are visual learners and those who have dyslexia.

The solution:
Dysoptic is a dyslexia awareness toolkit. Its goal is to provide a visual way of learning what it's like to have dyslexia, especially for those who don't. It helps fill in the missing gap between the content of a vast amount of text information with little to no visuals. Dysoptic's targeted audiences are parents, homeschooling families, and educators.Since the start of COVID-19, homeschooling is becoming a technique for a lot of parents. Dysoptic is there to help educate parents and learn how to work with their children in a more in-depth manner. Parents are now able to see how dyslexia affects their children.

Role: Graphic designer

Client: Senior Capstone Project

Programs used: Adobe After Effects, Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop

Project type: Animation, print design, typography

Still and animated logo

I designed the wordmark to have the D in Dysoptic looks like both a B and a D. The letters b and d are one of the most common letterforms that people with dyslexia tend to flip. Since I didn't want a random symbol for the logo, I decided to design this mark in the in-between of the letters b and d. I created a gif that animated the mark's transformation, turning into the two different letters to symbolize this never-ending shift of flipping letters.

Visual Worksheets

The visual worksheets are the part of the project that shows off what I was trying to achieve from the start, creating a visual way to learn. I created four worksheets so far that represent different types of dyslexia. Each one has a different animation that plays, demonstrating the kind of dyslexia I am trying to show. The four types of I did are phonological, rapid naming, surface, and letter reversal dyslexia.

Capstone Youtube Presentation

For the past three years, the Iowa State University Graphic Design program has held a live event in Des Moines, Iowa. This event was a showcase of the graduating senior's work. Due to COVID-19, that wasn't possible. As a member of the senior show committee, we decided to do a live youtube stream to recreate the idea of presenting our work. The following video is of me presenting my work, and answering questions asked by the people viewing the live stream.

I cut down the video I was apart of to focus on my project. If you'd like to see the full video, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PslDNco_ya0&t=125s
